Addiction thrives on secrecy and deception. Individuals suffering from substance abuse often hide their habits by using slang to refer to specific substances. A wide variety of drugs have street names, including prescription medications and “designer drugs.” To maintain discretion, drug users and those who sell drugs will use these drug street names in order to fly under the radar and continue their habitual use. In a very practical way, this is their own real language, and they use it as they seek, purchase, and use drugs.

The challenge for concerned friends and family members is to educate themselves about these drug code words, so they can be more aware of what’s really going on around them. If you hear these terms or notice messages containing them, it may be time to look for other red flags and warning signs. To that end, here is a list of common street names for drugs. When you familiarize yourself with these terms, you will be in a better position to help your addicted loved one. ADHD Medications

These prescription stimulants are given for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  However, they are popular drugs of abuse, especially among older teenagers and young adults, who use them as supposed study aids.  In fact, full-time college students are twice as likely to abuse ADHD meds as young adults who are not in college. Identifying drug abuse with ADHD medications may require a closer look at common drug street names for ADHD medications. Here are a few:

Amphetamines

Originally discovered in the late 1800s, amphetamines were not used medically until the 1930s when they were prescribed as decongestants.  Later, they were used to treat other conditions, such as obesity and narcolepsy. However, during World War II, they were used by soldiers for their performance-enhancing and stimulant effects.  This created to a full generation of addicts, and by the 1970s, they were listed as controlled substances.

Barbiturates and Benzodiazepines

Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are tranquilizing medications typically prescribed for the treatment of anxiety or insomnia. They are extremely habit-forming, and users may develop a physical dependence within a matter of weeks, even when the medications are used precisely as directed.  In fact, benzodiazepine addiction can be so severe that abrupt cessation can be fatal. Benzodiazepine use has largely replaced barbiturates, but the older medications are still used in some cases. The most-common barbiturates include:

In fact, 30%  of all prescription drug deaths involve benzodiazepines. But what drug street names do barbiturates and benzodiazepines take on from a day-to-day perspective?

Cocaine

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, cocaine is a greater drug threat in the United States than it has been in at least a decade.  In Columbia, where over 90% of cocaine originates, cultivation of the coca plant and cocaine production are both at an all-time high. Since 2010, the number of fatal overdoses in America involving cocaine has spiked by 350%. As one of the most commonly abused substances, cocaine is often referred to by many names. Designer Drugs

Often sold openly online or in convenience stores and head shops and mislabeled as such innocuous problems as “incense”, “fish tank cleaner”, or “deodorize”, these products are marketed as being “safe and legal” alternatives to drugs such as marijuana or methamphetamine. They are neither.  In fact, these unregulated products contain hundreds of dangerous chemicals, and their use and possession are prohibited by law. Because the formulation of these products is constantly changed to circumvent existing drug laws, there are currently over 1000 “brand names” being sold. Dextromethorphan

Contained in over 70 medications, including Nyquil, Robitussin, Vick’s, and TheraFlu, dextromethorphan is misused at higher doses as a hallucinogen.  In fact, heavy abusers may drink up to four bottles a day.

Fentanyl

Although it has a legitimate medical use as a painkiller for end-stage cancer patients, this super-powerful synthetic opioid is increasingly showing up among fatal overdoses.  In fact, within the past three years, fentanyl-involved deaths jumped by 540%. As of 2018, fentanyl replaced heroin as the single deadliest drug in America.  Fentanyl is up to 100 times stronger than morphine, and some analogs are 10,000 times more powerful.

Heroin

Ketamine is an anesthetic that is misused by people within the “rave culture” for its hallucinatory and psychedelic effects. Recent research suggests that ketamine abuse may lead to permanent brain damage.

Marijuana

Although its legal status in some states is changing, marijuana remains the most-used illicit drug in America.  While supporters say that it is harmless, research has shown a connection between heavy marijuana use and serious health problems, including bone disease, heart problems, stroke, impotence, brain damage, and fetal development. Marijuana also significantly affects mental health and can lead to the worsening of ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, depression, and schizophrenia.

MDMA

Methylenedioxymethamphetamine is the most popular of the so-called “club drugs” used by people who frequent discos, nightclubs, and music festivals. Methamphetamine

Rohypnol

Unlike other benzodiazepines, Rohypnol/flurazepam has no approved medical uses in the United States. Use is associated with sexual assault, robbery, and suicide.

Salvia Divinorum

This genus of Salvia is native to Southern Mexico. It has long been used in shamanistic medicine, but in recent years, it has been abused as a recreational drug. Chewed, smoked, or brewed in a tea, it produces hallucinogenic effects.

Steroids

Anabolic or “muscle-building” steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone, the male sex hormone. Abusers inject or ingest steroids or apply creams and gels at dosages that are up to 100 times greater than therapeutic levels. The mental health risks of steroid abuse include extreme paranoia and jealousy, irritability, aggression, delusions, mania, and impaired judgment. Physical effects include organ and heart damage, high cholesterol, blood clots, stunted growth, impotence, infertility, and exaggerated secondary sex characteristics.
